Abby and I are so excited to share our new collaborative project — our very first children’s book!
This idea has been brewing for years. Back when Abby worked at the Southeast Steuben County Library in Corning, NY, she spent a lot of time helping with the children’s section. We used to talk about which books the kids loved most, and we’d smile whenever we saw some of the old favorites we grew up reading. Those conversations sparked an idea: with Abby’s creativity and imagination and my love of drawing, maybe we could make something special — a bright, playful book that brings the same kind of joy to young readers that our favorites gave to us.
Abby started brainstorming ideas, themes, and rhymes right away. At the time, our niece was in elementary school, so it was easy to imagine creating a story she’d love to read. But as with many creative projects, life has a way of stretching timelines — it takes the right moment and focus to bring an idea to life.
Five years later, that moment finally came. I was ready to take Abby’s handwritten notes and sketches and help transform them into a real book. My task was to turn those early ideas into a polished, print-ready manuscript.
Abby was my guide in shaping the illustrations to match her vision for the story. Creating the pages so they would both print well and be easy to read came with plenty of challenges. I’ve done some design work for print before, but I don’t have much hands-on experience in a print shop. My goal was to understand the printer’s requirements and adjust my designs to fit — but you never really know if you’ve succeeded until that first test print. It was a nerve‑racking process at times, but also incredibly fun and rewarding.
After many months of work (and years of planning), we’re thrilled to finally share our first book with the world! It’s now available through Amazon KDP, and we hope to bring it to more bookstores around the Finger Lakes region soon. Abby and I will be posting more updates, videos, and stories about the creative process — plus news about upcoming events as we celebrate the release and share our book with young readers.
